Does your horse have muscular problems?

Have you ever wondered why your horse isn’t performing to the best of his/her ability, why he won’t bend one way or the other, or why he is always so stiff through the neck?

When your muscles are tight and sensitive you will try to limit the use in that area to avoid any serious injury or pain. Unfortunately, many of our horses do not complain loudly enough when their muscles are tight and sensitive, and they continue to work the same day after day.

Muscle injuries can sneak up on your horse little by little until a real problem eventuates. If your horse does have a problem, think back and I’m sure you will remember when their performance started to decline or their behaviour changed. Most muscle problems can still be treated and healed, but the longer you wait the longer the process can take.

All competition horses are equine athletes

Dressage horses need to perform consistently at an optimum level. These animals perform many exercises requiring great physical agility and strength. Like a gymnast, Dressage horses have to be flexible and strong, their muscles have to be loose and supple, but they still need that energy and spunk to perform. If they have a muscle injury it is hard (if not impossible) for them to perform to their optimum level. Equine body work is a fundamental part of the dressage horse’s wellbeing.

Over the coming months I will be discussing the benefits of equine massage and acupressure, good saddle fitting and shoeing and showing you some simple stretching exercises and movements that you can do on your own horse at home to not only prevent injury but to keep your horse in top condition.

About me

My name’s Jorie Soderberg. You might have seen me at dressage competitions riding my horse Lorien Park Belafonte, or perhaps I have treated your horse.

I’m a qualified equine body worker (EBW) through the highly recognized organisation Equinology, Inc®. I have always had a love of horses and been very interested in the inner workings of these magnificent animals.
